1. If you had to participate in one Olympic event, what would it be and why?
By default, fencing, as it's the only one I ever had any degree of actual proficiency in.  Sure, I'm 42 years old and over 20 years out of practice, but I like to think I could still at least score a few points.  (I actually wouldn't mind getting back into it at some point, just for fun.)

2. What is the one song you always sing along to?
There isn't a "the one," it's generally whatever catches my fancy in the moment, if nobody's around to hear it.  And also "Wanted: Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi.

3. Do you wear a seatbelt in the car?
There's really no good reason not to, right?

4. Car, SUV or truck and why?
Wagon.  I've always had an affinity for wagons ever since I had my '95 Escort wagon in college, and it's why I drive an Outback now.  Someday I'd love to have the ultimate wagon - a vintage hearse.

5. Are you a good/bad driver? Explain.
Of course I am.  It's everybody else who sucks.

1. What were some of the smells and tastes of your childhood?
That certain smell of the elementary school cafeteria is the one that's struck me lately, because the cafeteria kitchen at the college I'm teaching at  has had the same smell (as I remember it) every time I've walked past it this semester.  I was actually going to write a post about that here and hadn't gotten aroudn to it yet.  I guess the same cafeteria pizza would be a top pick for the taste side as well.

2. What did you have as a child that you do not think children today have?
Well, an analog childhood, for one.  Not counting game consoles, I didn't have a home computer until I was in 7th grade, a Windows 3.11 rig from a computer show, and home/consumer internet was still in its infancy - AOL 1.5 was, I think, my first firsthand taste of internet.  If we're talking specific toys - pipe-smoking Mr. Potatohead comes to mind.

3. What elementary grade was your favorite?
For fun, probably 5th - that was a year that I had good friends in class, some fun and memorable activities and no major issues.  For teacher quality, 6th - my teacher that year was very influential on me and, I believe, a direct reason for me studying and teaching history today.

4. What summer do you remember the best as a child?
To be honest, they mostly kind of blend together - I don't know how many memories I could actually assign to any specific summer break during those childhood years.  Endless summer, eh?

5. What one piece of advice would you give to your younger self, and at what age?
I don't know.  Maybe make a little more effort toward academic programs in high school, like joining the National Honor Society (which I was qualified for, but didn't feel like writing an essay at the time)?  But, it's never affected anything in adulthood or the real world.  Be more outgoing?  But, I'm naturally a textbook introvert, and I don't think I could've changed that.  I guess the main thing would just be a general "stop procrastinating."

This was a fun set of questions - and timely, considering my roadside find of the old TV this past week.

1. What's your favourite TV network?

I've never put much thought into the traditonal "Big Four" networks (even less since getting rid of cable), but I guess NBC is probably the one of the four I've watched the most shows from overall over the years?  If we're doing cable too, 2000s-era History Channel (when it was still about history, and shows like History's Mysteries, Modern Marvels, Cities of the Underworld etc. ran pretty much all day.

2. If you could create your own channel, what would it be?
I'd probably just show a lot of random, seldom-seen stuff - short-lived series, one-off specials that nobody remembers, failed pilots, etc.  The weirder and more obscure the better.  Of course Cop Rock would be one of my channel's staples.

3. What TV show did you watch as a child, that you wish they would bring back?
Oh man, inject early-'90s Nickelodeon into my veins.  Like, all of it.

4. What show have you always hated, and wonder why they ever made such a dumb show?
I guess the collected works of Chuck Lorre would top the list.  Far as I can tell, the last decent thing he made was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme song.

5. What TV show's seasons would you buy on DVD?
I mean most of the shows I'd want, that are available, I already have (or at least have means of watching).  Tying into question 3, a full-series edition of The Adventures of Pete & Pete would be great, since as far as I know only the first two seasons have DVDs.  But I'd be especially interested in stuff from the early/pioneer era of television, like from the late '30s through '50s, because I find that fascinating.  Unfortunately it's a pipe dream because very little actually survives; many shows were broadcast live and never recorded to begin with, and a lot of archival material no longer exists (most of what was recorded from the DuMont Network, for instance, was dumped into the East River in the '70s).

1. What is your favourite food?
Pizza.

2. What is your favourite food preparation method?
Cooking, by default, since i haven't gotten too much into baking yet (I'm still pretty much a novice at all of it).  I'm probably best at seasoning.

3. What is your favourite cuisine or style of cooking?
To eat, Italian, Mexican, Indian, general American mutt...  for cooking, many of my best work so far have been pizzas and soups.

4. Do you have any dietary restrictions and if so what are they?
No meat.

5. If you could introduce the whole world to one ingredient to improve their culinary experience, what would that be and why?
Dill is great for more than just pickles.  I use it on home fries to add some extra savory depth.

Haven't done one of these - or used this journal at all - in awhile.  I'll try to do a regular entry soon.

1. Do you believe that music can have a direct effect on your life?
I'll say yes, of course, although I'm having trouble thinking of a specific example and a specific way it affected me.  Plenty of cases where a song becomes associated with a specific event, place or time though.

2. What is your current favorite song?
I don't really have a single current favorite song.  But I have been playing Sea of Stars and the boss theme ("Encounter Elite!") has been creeping into my head a lot.

3. What's the one song from junior high that you can still rattle off all the words to?
I used to be able to do all of Blues Traveler's "Hook," including all of that almost rap-like third verse, and in a pinch I probably still could.  I mean, there's probably more than a few, really.

4. Did you have a prom song? Don't be embarrassed, we all did it.
"Nothing Else Matters" by Metallica.

5. Do you and your significant other have a "song" that you share?
No S/O currently, and I didn't really have an official "our song" with the last one.  Maybe that was part of the problem.

If I were in a situation to have an "our song" and I got to pick, Strawbs' "Grace Darling" (probably the acoustic Cousins/Willoughby duo version specifically) would be my top pick, with alternates including the Penguin's "Earth Angel," Steve Winwood's "Higher Love" and Belinda Carlisle's "Heaven is a Place on Earth."  Or maybe - heh - Michael Bolton's "Can I Touch You... There?"

1. What is the oldest object you own?
Not counting, like, rocks or something, I have both volumes of the book Adventures of Roderick Random published in the 1790s, so that'd probably take it.  For *my* oldest possession...  Oldest in at least semi-regular use... the main keychain that my Kramer-esque set of keys is built on is supposedly made from a WWII (presumably surplus) gunstrap, and I have a stereoscope viewer from the turn of the 20th century.  But I have other passive objects older than that too - some 19th-century books, an 1860s "Boss Tweed" bank, etc.

2. What object have you owned the longest?
If it counts as an object, I have a philodendron plant that's as old as I am.  I'm sure there are still some early-childhood toys lurking around somewhere too.  My oldest in at least semi-regular use... maybe my Blues Traveler shirt that I've had since 1994?

3. What is the newest object you own?
I got a Kung Fu Tea Princess Peach collectible can and cup that I'd ordered from eBay today, both of which will end up in my game room (after the tea is drank), so I guess that's it by default.

4. Who is your oldest living relative?
Not actually sure.  There's very few of us left, so on both sides of the family it may just be my mom's generation.

5. Who is your youngest living relative?
Also not sure.  I know I have some cousins that have kids but I don't know exact ages.

1) What are your five favorite birds?
Crows are cool, what with their intelligence and all.  Penguins for the flightless category.  I guess owls and woodpeckers for the interesting noises.  Ducks.  And honorable mention for chickens; not to eat but for their entertainment value (probably my favorite interview clip of Werner Herzog is this one of him talking about chickens).

2) What are your five favorite pet-type animals?
Based on pets I've had: cats for the standard #1 - have had three total over the years (two currently).  At various points in my youth I also had goldfish and hamsters.  I haven't had them, but for the other two slots ferrets and guinea pigs (or capybaras!).

3) What are your five favorite wild animals that live in your locale?

Chipmunks - two years ago I had a chipmunk family living under my front walk.  Eventually all but one (the mother?) left the hole, but the one that stayed behind I was able to eventually get to eat peanuts out of my hand.  I saw her(?) briefly last spring but then she disappeared.  I miss her.  Anyway, for the rest I also love watching the squirrels.  Foxes, deer (as long as they aren't in the road) and beavers.

4) What are your five favorite zoo animals that you always want to visit?
Assuming it's an ethical zoo, I don't think I would really pick favorites.  They're all interesting.

5) What are your five favorite cryptids that may or may not be extinct, may or may not exist in this world?
The yeti (and his North American cousin, the sasquatch).  Fresno Nightcrawlers for my dark-horse pick (who wouldn't love a giant walking pair of pants?).  The jackalope (unless it's still voiced by Dave Coulier).  And a few of my local New York boys: Champ (the Lake Champlain version of Nessie) and the NYC sewer alligators.

1. Have you seen a solar eclipse? Total, Partial, Annular? When and where?
Yes.  I mean, this past Monday's partial.  I saw it from my back porch.

2. Have you seen a lunar eclipse? Full? Partial? When and where?
I'm sure I have, but I don't know any specific dates offhand.

3. Have you seen a comet? Which one? When and where?
Yes, Hale-Bopp in '97.  Seen from home.

4. Have you seen a nova or supernova? When and where?
I don't think so.

5. Have you seen a meteor shower? Which one, when and where?
Leonids, whenever they happen.

Late again, but in my defense, this time it wasn't posted till 11:59 PM Friday.

1. Rice or potatoes?
Potatoes.  Rice has its uses as a side or ingredient, but potatoes can potentially become the main course.  Also, I like the taste better.

2. Fish or red meat?
Neither.

3. Salad or cooked vegetables?
Generally, I'm not adverse to salads - I have them as a side often enough - but cooked is usually more enjoyable.

4. Cake or ice cream?
Tough one.  Especially since I haven't had much of either in a long time.  If forced to pick, cake for special occasions, ice cream otherwise.  But ultimately my answer would have to borrow from Tommy Dreamer's immortal words: "I'll take 'em both, I'm hardcore!"

5. Water, soft drink, wine, beer, or hard alcohol?
They all have their place.  Wine is the one I'm least into, although I do love a glass of port now and then.  And I actually haven't had anything alcoholic, and only a small handful of sodas since starting my current health regime.  I drink seltzer more than anything.

I work like I drink: alone, but with a monkey watching me.

1. What is your native language?
'Murican English

2. Do you speak any other languages? Which ones?
I still have enough schoolboy Spanish left that while I can't do direct translations, and I dare not try to actually speak it, I can usually at least get the gist of it in written form.

3. How difficult is it for you to learn or understand new languages?
In high school it was actually pretty easy; I actually skipped a year of Spanish (I went from Conversational to Spanish 2, doing Spanish 1 as worksheets over the summer).  In college, though, I did a semester of French and really struggled with it, so I think I lost most of my language absorption ability by that point.  I do at least still remember one French phrase from the old Muzzy commercial: "Je suis le jeune fille!"

4. If you were going to study a new foreign language, which would you want to learn?
French, Italian and/or German to supplement my art history, or Japanese so I can play Japanese games that never got English translations, and .  Not necessarily in that order.

5. How are you at reading subtitles in foreign films?
Er, perfectly fine.  That doesn't really seem like a particularly difficult skill.  I do certainly prefer subtitles to dubbing, if that's what the question is getting at.

1) What's normal March weather like in your area?
Variable.  In general, can be anything from high 70s to blizzards.

2) Are you following any spring sports?
Just my rasslin', but that's not seasonal.  (I mean, I guess spring is one of the bigger times of year for it with so many promotions running on or around WrestleMania Weekend and all.)

3) What's a summer wardrobe staple you haven't had out since last season (or if you're southern hemisphere, answer this for winter)
I'm not into fashion enough to really have seasonal wardrobes, but I do have a relatively new mesh porkpie hat that I'll probably wear more in the spring/summer.

4) What's your favorite spring break memory?
I don't remember if it was specifically on spring break - although it probably was - but one of my most memorable family vacations (early '90s, probably) was to Philadelphia.  We did a lot of the standard historical stuff - Independence Hall, Freedom Trail, Liberty Bell, etc. - but the "main event" so to speak was the Three Stooges convention.

5) How do you feel about daylight savings time?
If I had my druthers, they'd just stick with it year-round.  Either way the time change needs to go, but savings time matches my natural sleep pattern better.

1. What's a skill you'd like to learn?
Right now, I want to master using a pizza peel, so when it gets warmer I can use an outdoor wood oven.  Just can't seem to get the hang of it for some reason.

2. What's a hobby you'd like to try?
I dunno.  As I think I've mentioned before in this journal, I would like to get back into fencing sometime, and at my age it would probably be more as a hobby than anything else.

3. What's the best compliment you've ever received?
I'd have to say that some of the positive comments I've gotten from class observations from my department chairs while teaching have been some of the most gratifying.

4. What's one way in which you are awesome?
I mean, come on, how can I limit it to just *one* way.  After all, am I not an idol to millions?  Inspiration to children everywhere?  The man with the rear that makes the girls cheer?  All this and modest, too.

5. What's a gift you would like to receive (in case anyone asks)?
As I've gotten older I've become less and less into receiving gifts.  I think I'm more at a point where any material item I want, I'd rather just buy myself.  So, if you want to get me something, cash is fine.

What is the name of...

1. Your favorite book?
Oh, jeez.  I don't think I really have an answer to that one.  So I'll just say The Three Stooges Scrapbook.

2. Your favorite movie?
This one I *can* answer.  Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man (1995).

3. Your least favorite adaptation of a book to a movie?
While not *exactly* an adaptation of a specific book, my least favorite movie of all time would probably have to be A Christmas Story 2, ostensibly based on Jean Shepherd's writings, but lacking any of the charm, and missing many of the points of the books (and the original movie), with the idea of a boy learning life lessons and gaining an understanding of how family and the world at large works replaced with unfunny slapstick.  It comes off as more of a lame parody than either a continuation or an homage, and then has the gall to bill itself as "the REAL sequel," ignoring My Summer Story and the PBS specials that Shepherd was actually personally involved with.  I have seen movies that are objectively worse - Nukie comes to mind - but A Christmas Story 2 is the only movie that's ever made me legitimately angry while watching it.

4. Your least favorite adaptation ever of anything to a movie?
See #3.

5. Your first ever novel/comic book/movie character crush?
I think that list begins and ends with April O'Neil (TMNT '87).
bookofdanielvol2: (Default)
1. Have you ever been the president of anything?
No.  My political career was limited to running for Vice President of my 5th grade class, with a platform of "more class parties" (which I would've had absolutely no authority to provide), and gave out Jolly Ranchers as part of my campaigning.  I lost by one vote to a kid named Scooter, who gave out chocolate.  I should've gone with chocolate, maybe I'd have won, and who knows where I'd be now.

2. What do you think is the most important leadership trait?
The ability to listen, and the ability to understand and learn from the past.

3. What time period did you find the most interesting to learn about in history class?
I mean, I'm a history teacher so I probably shouldn't play favorites too much.  My specialty is US history (esp. 19th century), but really, it's all interesting.

4. What's something you think about doing, but you haven't gotten back into in several years?

I'd love to get back into fencing at some point; I did that in high school and a little in college.  At age 40 and 20+ years out of practice, I doubt there's much opportunity left for any sort of major competition (unless there's some sort of senior tour), but just doing it for fun would be cool.

5. If you could add one more random holiday to February, what would it be?
National Stay Home, Eat Pizza and Play Video Games Day, I guess.  But really, eh, there's enough holidays already.
bookofdanielvol2: (Default)
Bit of a random selection this time.

1. At what age did you discover you had a favorite color?
Not really sure; my favorite color is gray but I probably didn't realize that until high school.  I don't really remember having a specific favorite color in childhood.

2. What type (genre) of film do you prefer to see in a theater versus one you'd watch at home?
Silent movies with live accompaniment.  Otherwise I'm good at home.

3. What's your oldest object or item since childhood?
If it counts as an "object," I have a golden pothos plant that's as old as I am, so I guess it'd be that.

4. In what book would you insert yourself as a side character or friend to the protagonist?
That's kind of a hard one.  A lot of my favorites - such as Bernard Cornwell's Warlord trilogy and Saxon series - are in settings that, while interesting, aren't necessarily ones I'd want to actually *be* in.  So I think I'll pick the old Three Stooges comics - 'cuz then I could hang out with the Stooges.

5. What's your favorite shape or type of cloud?
The Glow Cloud.  All hail the Glow Cloud.
bookofdanielvol2: (Default)
1. Do you cook regularly or does someone else cook for you?
Myself, not that there's much choice at the moment.  Fortunately I've started learning more about "real" cooking over the last few years, so when time permits I can actually make some decent stuff.

2. Which are you better at making: sweet or savory foods?
I haven't gotten much into baking yet, so I guess savory by default (pizzas, soups, things like that).  I have made a couple of decent cookies, though, like Florentine lace cookies and a no-bake cookie from an old WWE cookbook ("Viscera's cookies").

3. If you had to work as a chef in a restaurant of your choice, which restaurant would best complement your current culinary skills?
Probably a pizza place, since I've gotten pretty good at those (and they're also my favorite to eat).

4. What is a cooking tip that you know, but other people generally aren’t aware of?
When making pizzas I use oil to stretch the dough instead of flour or cornmeal.  I find it easier to work with, gives a nice crisp to the crust when it comes out, and I don't make as much of a colossal mess with it.

5. Do you have a recipe you would like to share?
I'm not really advanced enough to really develop my own recipes yet.  But one of my favorite quick sides is home fries made with red potatoes, fried and seasoned with salt, pepper and a generous sprinkling of dill.

1. What is your current main mode of transportation? e.g. car, bike, subway, walking, etc.
Just my ‘19 Outback.  93k miles and counting.

2. Are you satisfied with your current main mode of transportation (answer to question 1)? Why?
Yes.

3. Do you think you'll change your means of transit soon? e.g. buy a car, get rid of your car, walk more etc.? If so, why?
I hope not to.

4. If time, distance and money were not factors, how do you prefer to get from point A to point B?
Teleportation would be nice.

5. What was your worst transit experience?
A train car with the heat stuck on in late spring, between NYC and Poughkeepsie.

1. In what ways do you expect/hope this year to be better than last year?
Continuing my wellness journey is my main goal priority.  Physically, I hope to be close to - or even past - my second main weight goal by my birthday, if not before (and, at my current rate, I should be able to do it).

2. In what ways do you expect/hope this year to be worse than last year?
Politics.  What's the deal with politics?  I don't get it.  Am I right, people?

3. What year would you travel back to if you could?
Assuming this is a year from my own history - I don't know that, at the end of the day, going backward is *really* something I'd want to do.  But, if forced to pick, probably 2004-2005, to go back to college junior/senior year at New Paltz.  I never really wanted to leave in the first place, and even there there's probably a few things I could do differently.

4. What was your worst year?
2007-2008.  Too many losses, including my father and grandmother.  I was off the deep end for a bit there.  2023 honestly probably ranks too; there were certainly some good points, but a lot of it was in a haze due to my sleep issues, there were also a lot of personal losses, and there was the breakup at the end of the year.  Not nearly as bad, but 2001, after high school graduation, might also rank, as post-grad aimlessness did lead to what was probably some form of depression.

5. What was your best year?
Tough call.  They all have good and bad, to varying degrees, of course.  As mentioned, junior and senior years of college (2004-2005) were great.  And I actually did have some fun senior year of high school too (2001).  Grad school (2009-11) was good.  But I honestly think - and hope - that I haven't had my best years yet.

1. What are you hoping for in 2024?
Basically, just to keep pushing forward toward self-improvement.

2. What was your low point of 2023?
The first part of the year was rough, with the split as well as various health issues.

3. And your high point of 2023?
Getting into better health (still an ongoing process), and getting to teach a class again.

4. Do you make New Year’s resolutions or are they just a waste of time?
Nah.  I never kept them so there isn't much point.

5. Do you have any traditions for celebrating New Year’s Eve?
Nowadays, probably sleeping.

12/22
1. Are you easily offended or upset by things other people post online?
Not generally.  But I tend to avoid the more charged sections of the internet.

2. How much does the order in which the Friday Five questions are presented here matter to you?
Not at all.

3. Have you ever made an effort to be inclusive, only to have someone complain that you were not being inclusive enough?
No, I don't think I've run into that.

4. Are you having a happy holiday season?
Reasonably.  It'll certainly end up being better than last year's.

5. Which holidays do you observe or celebrate?
Secular X-mas, with recognition to Festivus.

---

12/15
1. What tradition makes the holidays for you?
Given the option, I would gladly have A Christmas Story on a loop the entire day.

2. Have you ever gone caroling door to door?
I don't *think* so.  I did do caroling with a Sunday school group in my very-young church-going days, but I don't think it was door-to-door, just in the park or something.

3. What holiday tradition would you happily see the back of?
Xmas stuff showing up in stores and in public before Thanksgiving (or, at this point, before *Halloween*).

4. Have you ever spent Christmas way from your home and family?
No, fortunately.

5. Did you put milk and cookies out for Santa?
I don't go for milk on its own, and the cookies (which I really shouldn't have at this point) wouldn't make it to the time Santa arrives.
